Application and Value of AOI Inspection in SMT Production
AOI (Automatic Optical Inspection) is standard intelligent equipment for modern SMT lines. With high-definition vision and image comparison technology, it can detect various soldering defects efficiently and replace most manual visual inspection.

Main Inspection Items

AOI can accurately detect short circuit, dry joint, insufficient solder, excessive solder, component offset, tombstoning, billboarding, missing and wrong components, solder beads and other common defects after reflow.

Typical Application Scenarios

  1. Full Inspection After Reflow

Install AOI after reflow oven to inspect every PCB board, so as to block defective products in time.

  2. Process Monitoring

It counts defect data in real time, helping engineers find parameter problems in printing, placement and soldering and make adjustments quickly.

  3. Sampling Re-inspection

For high-end and high-reliability products, AOI works together with manual sampling to further reduce defect outflow.

Advantages Over Manual Inspection

  1. High Efficiency: Keep pace with high-speed production line and support mass production.

  2. Unified Standard: Judged by fixed program, free from visual fatigue and subjective error.

  3. Traceable Data: Automatically record defect information for quality review and process improvement.

  4. Cost Saving: Cut down labor cost for visual inspection in long-term production.

Note that AOI cannot check hidden solder joints under BGA and QFN packages. X-Ray, function test and aging test are required as complementary solutions.
Globalwell is equipped with high-performance AOI for full inspection after reflow. We analyze inspection data to optimize processes continuously and deliver qualified PCBA products with multi-layer quality control.
